Story
The birth of an independent video game is rarely a matter of red carpets and million-dollar budgets. It is born, almost always, in the half-light, fueled by sleepless nights and, above all, by an open wound.
Such is the case of Imprisoned, a work that rises from the ashes of the legendary game La Prisión (The Prison), released in 2000 by Dinamic Multimedia.
The day the world went dark
To understand the soul of Imprisoned, you have to travel back in time. There was an era when the yards of La Prisión teemed with life, with alliances and with rivalries. For many, it was the place where they grew up. A game whose social pull was strong enough to forge friendships not only through the screen, but in real life as well.
In 2018, however, after a journey riddled with ups and downs, silence fell all at once. With no grand announcements and no formal farewells, the servers went dark forever. Overnight, a small but unbreakable community was left orphaned by the game that had shaped their lives. But they never forgot.

The echo of a forgotten community: how was Imprisoned born?
Imprisoned did not come out of a marketing meeting hunting for ‘whatever sells on the market’. Among those hundreds of exiled players, chance and a shared passion would have it that a handful of members of that community crossed paths.
They were not just nostalgic players; they were professional programmers, designers, artists and musicians from the video game industry. Once they came together, they realized they held in their hands the technical know-how and the engine needed to do justice by, and for, an entire community.
But there was an obstacle to overcome, and it was not technical but human. A team of people juggling their day jobs with this selfless project demanded a titanic effort, poured into their weekends and spare hours, sustained solely by passion and the commitment to bring back to life a universe that had meant so much to them.
A change of course: rewriting destiny in Unreal Engine
Soon, the team understood that settling for a simple replica of the past fell short of the talent that had come together. There was a real need to look to the future. The original project had shortcomings typical of its era that held the experience back, and the team decided it was time to improve on them.
In an act of technical and creative courage, the project was rewritten entirely from scratch in Unreal Engine, becoming a far more ambitious undertaking. The leap to this state-of-the-art engine brought new gameplay mechanics, a renewed art direction and a modern technical infrastructure. The corridors of the new prison were no longer mere passageways; they had become environments where real-time lighting and visual realism turned old nostalgia into a groundbreaking work.
The unexpected twist: the return of the original team
Eight years later, with the development of Imprisoned fully established and rewritten in Unreal Engine, fate had one last, unexpected plot twist in store. The original team behind the classic La Prisión decided to step back onto the stage.
Their proposal was straightforward: relaunch the classic game, adapted to run on today’s systems and technology.
For the nostalgic, it was a reunion with the past, but for the Imprisoned development team it marked a turning point. There was no longer any sense in reliving yesterday exactly as it had been, and that forced the team to rethink its future.

Imprisoned today and the road ahead
After a number of meetings, Imprisoned decided to leave behind the label of being a remake and become a new, independent project. The return of the classic game did not slow the team down; on the contrary, it gave them complete freedom to break away and focus on building something entirely new.
The future of Imprisoned is about keeping the original essence alive while breathing life into a new design, putting new mechanics to the test and crafting a renewed experience that speaks both to old-school players and to a new generation that never got to cross the original walls.
For this group of creators, driven by the excitement of seeing how far they can take their own vision of the game and backed by a loyal community, the true evolution of Imprisoned has only just begun.
